COMMENTS ON DAY 7 - STANDARD NATIONALS - July 17, 1995

Well, today was a big overdevelopment day. It was supposed to be the best weather of the contest. Charlie and the task committee (Ray Gimmey, Dale Bush) sent us to Callahan (south) , Dry Lake (east), Radar Dome (northwest), Deer Mountain (south southwest), and home for about 220 miles. Scattered thunderstorms clobbered the east half of the contest area with considerable stable air and anvil blowoff over the second turn.

There were only four finishers: Bruce Dyson (Y5), Claudio Ponte (CP), Rick Walters (3R), and John Byrd (30) who landed close to sunset. Many of of the top ten to fifteen landed out. Many more (including this author, WX) elected to abort rather than flying between thundertorms to the second turn (Dry Lake).

Unfortunately, Jay Walker, landed early, at Weed about 23 miles out before the first turn.

It's now 9:30 pm Monday night and too early to say anything about who out front. Looks good, though for John Byrd.

Walt Rogers, WX

Bruce Dyson won the day in his Discus. There were only a handful of finishers - Johnny Bird, Claudio Ponte, Rick Walters, and Bruce Dyson. The task called was the largest of the contest - 219 miles - evidently an overcall! Jae Walker, who had led the contest from the 2nd day landed out and has dropped to second place. The first 9 places are held by pilots in Discus' - again proving this ships superiority in weak conditions. The Genesis flown by Karl Striedieck landed with 8 other pilots after 57 miles. Karl is in 21st spot overall. Four of the 29 pilots do not appear to be flying anymore.

Today was another tough day, with T-storms a strong possibility. The task committee called a task to the east, hoping the storms would hold off. The task was Dry Lake, Radar Facility, Deer Mountain, and return. Most of the pilots ran into the storms before Dry Lake, and some opted to just get home from there while others pressed on and landed out. The only finishers were Bruce Dyson, John Byrd, Rick Walters, and Claudio Ponte. Dyson, who managed to stay very high throughout the day, and was the pilot not to get scared, won the day. The real story was John Byrd's flight through T-storms at the end of the day, almost landing several times, to make it back and finish at 7:30. This flight put him in first over Walker, who landed out early.
